KDE Telepathy Moves To Extragear
KDE Telepathy has now moved from playground to extragear! This is the first step towards slowly taking over as being the official default messaging client in KDE, which will kick the crap out of any other IM clients out there.
I'd like to publicly thank everyone who helped get us to this stage. It's not been an easy ride, and we've made our fair share of mistakes (I'm probably responsible for most of them). We still have a long way to go, we're mostly a very solid product, but there's a staggering amount of wishlist items and features needed before we can claim to be finished. I just installed telepathy
I just installed telepathy 0.2 as I am in the search of a new IM and i have to say it really rocks! I first thought being at version 0.2 it's gotta be buggy and stuff, but no such sign till now! Thanks a lot for your work, it's really apprechiated! Sadly I dont have a mic at the moment to try out the audio / video chat :-).
There are just two things missing that are not all too big, but that are really driving me crazy: First is the absence of a chat history.
And the second, and most important one to me is that you can't minimize the contact list to the system tray. I read somewhere that this is intentional, as you can stay connected through like a plasma widget or so. But, the contact list is the only way for me to stay in contact and write with the people on my list. I would really, really appreciate it, if you would reconsider adding at least an option to make it possible to minimize the contact list to the system tray! PLEASE! :-)

With 0.3 left-clicking on the plasmoid will open the contact list.
If you can find any actual problem with actual usage of this implementation we will happily fix that problem.

I'm sorry, I didn't know that something like this was coming in 0.3. I guess I should read planetkde more regularly :-).
It did confuse me a little, that the desktop plasmoid asks me for a nickname and the contact list is using my full name from the system. Also the contact picture, that I did set in the contact list doesn't seem to be the same as in the plasmoid. That does seem a little bit strange and my brain didn't seem to make to needed connection,... oh well :-).
So just realized, after I did read your post, that I can drag the telepathy plasmoid to the taskbar :-/. Damn, now I feel stupid. Anyways... Left-clicking on the plasmoid to open the contact list will really nice!

The only problems I can see
The only problems I can see so far with that are:
a) It's not among the other programs, like Mail client, or Audio player, but next to things like "show workspace" and the notification icon. This can be a bit confusing in the beginning I guess, but in the end it's just a different view of how you see your "social contacts" and one might as well argue here, that other desktops do it the "wrong" way :-). Still, the place feels strange.
b) The icon for the task bar is way too big... it really looks out of place :-).
So nothing that hurts too much! ;-)

Right click on the system tray, go to the system tray settings, enable "Instant messaging blah blah blah"

Ah damn, now i feel stupid again! So many possibilities in KDE, but I got to find them :-). Still, the diversity, that there are name and icon settings at two different locations (contact list & plasmoid) is somewhat confusing. Plus you got to realize that you have to drag the plasmoid to the taskbar or active it in the system tray. Maybe this should be somehow default when you install telepathy. My problem is solved, but I don't know how many others will have the same problem, when they get the warning when they try to close the contact list.
Anyway, this is really already a great piece of software imho! Now thanks a lot again & have a nice day!

ACK. I tried kde-telepathy from time to time and it's becoming better and better. But without OTR support I can't change. Well but this seems not releated to kde-telepathy alone. As far as I know it's a missing feature in telepathy itself. Hopefully (kde-)telepathy will integrate it in (not so far) future ;-)
